Studio Bell Tour – Home of the National Music Centre

During my tour in Canada earlier this year, I visited Studio Bell – home ion the national music centre in Calgary, Alberta.

It’s not a holiday without some sort of nerdy/work related detour in my opinion but it did take some convincing to get my group along to this museum.

With my passion for music and my work at Apple Music, I was particularly interested in learning my about Canadian music and culture.

Studio Bell has the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and even some special treats like Geedy Lee’s extensive guitar collection and a country music exhibit (my guilty pleasure) with content from famous country signers like Shania Twain.

On of my biggest takeaways was learning so many of my favourite artists were actually Canadian! Here’s a list of some artists that you may not have known were Canadian.

  • Drake
  • The Weeknd
  • Neil Young
  • Celine Dion
  • Shania Twain
  • Leonard Cohen
  • Buffy Sainte-Marie
  • Avril Lavine (a childhood favourite)
  • Bryan Adams
  • Kaytranada
  • Daniel Ceaser

Overall, I had a great time exploring the history of music in Canada, listening to snippets of music from some of their highest selling and most successful artists and understand how Canadians consume music.

This was a pretty special experience to get to see the hall of fame as well and I encourage people to go out of their way to experience museums like this when they have the opportunity as you can learn so much about another culture and market.
